But, late that night I received a call from Larisa. I was sleepy but the poor woman was so nervous that I quickly became alert. She explained that Henry had made a marriage proposal. She had been so surprised that she could not say a word in response. At the end of his speech instead of staying something like "let's think about it," she kept silent. His expression turned guarded. Henry helped her to get a cab and left. Larisa explained that he had written that he was 47 years old and sent photos in which he looked younger. But when they met she could not believe it was the same Henry that she had imagined before. This tall, elegant man looked much older and it caused a double feeling in her heart.
We again met with Julia in the evening for dinner. He asked her many questions. "Why did you color your hair? In your pictures you had a different color." He was becoming tired and irritated.

He was very attractive but somebody different from that whom she already loved. This explained why Larisa was so nervous during their first meeting at the Russian ladies social. She was too shy to ask Henry about his age so she asked related questions, but he always skipped straight answers and only made jokes. So, she came to the conclusion that Henry had lied about his age. The fact was she did not care about his age but she worried that if he lied about this point maybe he lied totally about everything. It was a matter of trust. She did not know what to do. From the one side she was concerned about trust but from the other she felt strong chemistry and liked him. A Russian dating quandary.
