She was a very attractive Russian lady, even with her wire rim spectacles. Poor lady, the upper left rim was broken and taped together. I don't know why but this made her even more attractive - - down right beautiful actually. I guessed she was somewhere in her early thirties. She was reading "Master and Margarita", a great book by Bulgakov about the insanity of communism under Stalin, using Satan as a metaphor.
"This is too much!" I said with a laugh, gesturing toward the book in her hand, "If you recall, Bulgakov began that book with the main character striking up a conversation with Satan - - in a PARK!" "Oh, my God, you are right!" She paused and then giggled "Am I the devil, or are you?" Like so many Russian ladies, she was delightfully intelligent, highly educated, witty, humorous, curious, and above all, communicative.

After a few minutes I finally found an opening to ask the obvious question, "Why are you reading in the snow?" "Because my apartment is too crowded and I am lonely there." I suppose my posture straightened and I'm sure my eyes must have opened a little wider. Incredulously I asked, "How can a beautiful lady be lonely in a crowded apartment?" She hesitated for a moment and answered in Russian.
